Like it or not mistakes happen. Even your marketing team, who you rely on to be a subject matter expert, isn’t perfect. Maybe we misunderstood an email, had too much confidence in the output of a fog machine (don’t ask), or misjudged a brand ambassador’s arrival time when they were stuck in traffic, the reality is there are bound to be hiccups on a program. Since there isn’t a way to completely avoid mistakes, the key is knowing how to bounce back
1. Always be honest
Honesty is always the best policy. While you may need to swallow your pride and admit you made a mistake, it is ALWAYS better to be honest with your client rather than getting caught in a lie. It’s one of the golden rules personally and professionally.
2. Be solution oriented
Maybe you can’t execute an element exactly as you originally anticipated, but you need to immediately start thinking of backup options that will work for everyone. Brainstorm ideas on how you can overcome this hurdle in the most streamlined and cost-effective way.
3. Have grace
Don’t point the finger at others for a mistake. Own up, take responsibility, but also give yourself grace. As we mentioned before no one is perfect. Learn from your mistake, don’t forget the lesson, but also don’t dwell on it or get too down on yourself – the world will keep on spinning.
4. Take a deep breath
When mistakes happen, it may feel like the program is falling apart, but it won’t. You need to remain calm so you can do all of the above and find a solution for your client and your business.
